The History Museum Exhibits...

In its location on the 3rd floor of Springfield's historic City Hall, The History Museum contains over 3,000 square feet of exhibit space. This space contains both permanent and rotating exhibits that are designed to entertain and inform visitors of diverse backgrounds and age ranges.

The permanent exhibit:

In The History Museum's permanent exhibits, the visitor can explore the rich and unique heritage of this part of the Ozarks region. Beginning with the region's prehistoric origins, the displays take the visitor through the earliest settlement of the region, on to the upheaval of the Civil War, and into the period of growth that followed. The permanent exhibit concludes in the late 1950s, when Springfield was named an All-American City.

To enhance the exhibit, The History Museum has included two interpretive videos. The first video serves as a short introduction to the local history, while the second highlights the popularity of the "Ozarks Jubilee" television show.

In addition, The History Museum has three hands-on areas for our younger guests. These include a Native American grinding stone, a Civil War tent, and a variety of household items similar to those used in pioneer households. These items are historically accurate reproductions, so visitors are encouraged to handle them in order to better understand the lives of our ancestors.

  The rotating exhibits:

In addition to the permanent exhibit, The History Museum develops short-term rotating exhibits throughout the year. These exhibits complement the permanent exhibit and allow The History Museum to showcase its unique holdings. See our Calendar of Events to learn more. You can also see some of our previous rotating exhibits by visiting our Virtual Exhibits Gallery.
