The History Museum for Springfield-Greene County is a private, not-for-profit organization that began in 1975 as a Bicentennial project. The space for the History Museum is provided by the City of Springfield, but we must raise all necessary program and operating funds through admissions, gift shop sales, special events, memberships, donations and grants.

Originally housed in downtown Springfield, the History Museum found its first "real" home in the Victorian Bentley House. Then in 1993 the History Museum was moved to Springfield's Historic City Hall. This impressive structure, built in 1894 and used originally as the U.S. Customhouse and Post Office, allowed The History Museum to open its first permanent exhibit on this region's history. Titled "Crossroads at the Spring," it tells the local story from the coming of the first people to southwest Missouri 12,000 years ago up to 1957, when Springfield was voted an All-American City.

We do not charge an admission fee,
but a modest suggested donation
ranging from $1.00 to $3.00 is
used to offset museum expenses.

How You Can Help...

The History Museum relies upon, and is truly grateful for, the support of its visitors, volunteers and members. With the help of its supporters, the History Museum has grown from a small store-front museum in downtown Springfield to a regionally recognized institution.

If you want to help the History Museum to grow and prosper, we suggest the following:

Be a Volunteer --
Volunteers are another vital part of The History Museum. Without them we would not have many of the programs and activities that help bring our local history to the public. Volunteers serve in a number of capacities, depending on their strengths and interests. Some give tours to school groups or help catalog the collections. Many are here on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, while others help out as their schedules permit. -=Learn More=-

Become a Member --
Memberships are the backbone of the History Museum and we encourage you to join the hundreds of people who currently support us through membership. -=Learn More=-

Join the Heritage Society --

The Heritage Society is a growing group of corporate sponsors whose goal is to provide The History Museum with a solid financial base for the future. If your business is interested in being a part of this effort, please contact the History Museum for more information.

Consider making a 1-time financial contribution to The History Museum --
Using Network for Good you can make a contribution on-line. This site makes it possible for you to contribute to any non-profit organization in the United States. You determine the amount and you determine how much personal information you want the organization to receive. Network for Good forwards 100% of your donation to the organization of your choice.
