Our research collection contains over
30,000 books and documents, including books by area authors, historical
reference books, local family papers, deeds and maps. Our photograph holdings
are particularly strong, with more than 20,000 historical photographs
preserving images of Springfield from its beginnings.
The research holdings are not open on a daily basis at this time. Public history days are generally held four times per month, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday and Saturday. That schedule is open to change, however, so it is strongly suggested that researchers contact The History Museum prior to the day they wish to visit. The History Museum staff will also attempt to answer letter or e-mail inquiries, within certain limitations. If a research question extensive staff time, a fee will be charged. The curator will discuss any fees with the patron prior to commencing the research project. In addition to our holdings, researchers may want to visit other research facilities in the Springfield area, including the Local History and Genealogy Room at the Springfield-Greene County Public Library. While the Greene County Historical Society does not have research collections available, they do have a web site that will answer many questions about our local history. Please contact
us if you have any questions regarding The History Museum for Springfield-Greene
County's policies on use of the collections. |
